Swedish Coast Guard improves existing Skimmer System for Recovery of High Viscous Oil.

Over the past years Oil Spill Response Organisations, Scientists and Manufacturers from the Nordic countries have been discussing new solutions for already existing oil recovery equipment within the so called "Copenhagen Agreement".

As a direct result of the work done in the technical group the Swedish Coast Guard, lead by Mr Jan Fälteke, has improved and adjusted some of the already existing Brush Skimmers for operations in High Viscous Oil.

Three general areas of problem were identified by the technical group:

  • Oil recovery with debris.
  • Oil flow into the pump unit.
  • Pumping of oil to recovery tank.

  • To improve the skimmer performance at the three areas of problem in high viscous oil operations a FOILEX TDS 200 Skimmer Pump was chosen.

The TDS Pump unit and its 3 x 120° pump inlet in combination with the long feeding screw provides a large exposed area of the rotating screw which effectively catches and cuts debris contaminated high viscous oil and feeds it into the pressure build up section independent of the pump suction capability.
