Oil Spill at Japanese Refinery

In late August about 2000 litres of crude oil which was being processed at a Japanese refinery spilled over to a nearby river. FOILEX Mini Skimmer system was deployed and all of the spilled oil was eventually recovered.

Shortly after the spill, Foilex’ Japanese representative KANEYASU CO. LTD. was requested to mobilise their stock Mini Skimmer system.

Due to its light weight and compact design it was easily transported on site and because of its low draft was suitable for use in these shallow waters.

Due to simple operation and easy handling, the refineries’ own staff was quickly educated in the use of the equipment and very soon were able to operate the system themselves.

Most of the oil was recovered quickly, but rocks and sand on the shallow located sea floor were contaminated because of tide and wave effects.

The operations thus had to continue until all the oil that was trapped in. Oil on the rocks and sand was cleaned off and recovered in the water by the floating skimmer.
