Diesel Oil Spill in Sai Gon River, Vietnam
A collision occurred early Monday morning January 12 on Sai Gon River between the Hai Phong cargo ship "Fortune
Freighter" and a province Army Fuel Barge carrying 500 tones of Diesel oil, causing an oil spill.
The Rescue team and Dai Minh Pte, Oil Spill Response Station arrived on site soon after the accident but were unable to stop the barge and its tugboat from sinking to the bed of the Saigon river about 90 minutes after collision. Approx. 1/4 of the barge's oil spilled into the river.
Large amounts of diesel fuel was recovered by using a Hydrodynamic Circus equipped with Foilex TDS Skimmer, oil absorbents, booms and also with help from local people living around the area. The remaining ¾ of oil in four compartments of the sunken barge was successfully pumped to a container barge and the Rescue Team had the oil spill under control by the same afternoon.
On Tuesday a Salvage Team utilised a 1000 tons crane to lift the tugboat from the river bed and in the afternoon the team also lifted the sunken barge, clearing the river for traffic.
Up to now the damages have not been assessed. But at
District 2, Ho Chi Minh City it was estimated that about 4 Ha. of bindweed was polluted and up to 2000 Tilapia
fishes died. The value is estimated above 300 Million Vietnamese dollars.
